Nail Polish...

Nail polish is not something you think of as a bonding tool. But it is. In 2006, on our first short-term mission trip to work with orphans in Monterrey, I got the idea to paint the girls' nails. I borrowed the polish from some of the teens staying in the dorm with us. It was so touching to see these grown men (daddies who had never really considered painting their own daughter's nails) attempting to tenderly paint these tiny fingernails. These girls seeing maybe for the first time the gentle love of a father.
When we were in China last year I learned that unlike my American daughter's who prefer light pink with glitter, the girls in the orphanage there like their nails bright red. Red is a significant color to China... symbolizing wealth, good luck, and fortune.
So, now as we prepare for our trip this summer, I have my nail polish ready to go.
I can't wait to see the kids and spend time bonding with the girls.
